I need to make sure that I'm not remaining in range to be hit by an opponent. I know that I tend to stand stubbornly too close - and depending on the reach of the person, I'm not always able to be offensive. A few more hits to the head might help cement this concept.

i learned i need to my elbows down and commit to my jabs. i have also seen improvements in some areas - head work, foot work, and not being a one hit wonder. Most of that is due to feedback from a lot of people which is great.

This week I struggled with motivation. The excuse that it’s August and I should skip class to enjoy summer was very tempting. I pushed myself to go to class though and I’m glad I did. Once there I always had a really good workout, had fun and left feeling great.

As far as what I learned relating to kickboxing skills… well, I already knew I was slow thanks to a few jabs to the head in previous classes so that wasn’t a surprise! But what I did learn is that I can move faster not just by increasing the speed of the techniques but by shortening the time between them. I am taking much too long to ‘reset’ in between each move.

For me... I had FUN. I really enjoyed this week and working with everyone. Overall this week was about motivation for me. While I didn't "feel" like working out... working out anyway was a victory.

As an aside, I am very excited about this site and have put A LOT of work into it so please keep using it.

I will be leaving access to this post at the top so whenever something dawns on you that you received from class, please post it here!

Thanks for making a difference guys!

I left class this morning as I do every Friday - sweaty, swore and spent. Today, however, my biggest lessens were more physical than mental. I learned that I need to trust in and rely more on the skills I have learned. I learned that I need to be more confident in myself. I learned that I need to focus more on my abilities and not, to quote Master Dan, "get in my own way." Today something clicked for me. These lessens I learned on the mat can be used throughout other aspects of my life and this is more valuable than the calories I burned - although those are a great bonus!

oops! My biggest lessens were more MENTAl than physical :)

This week I learned that I rely too much on my left side- i.e. jabs, left hooks. Not only does that let my opponent know exactly what's coming, but I find myself getting into sort of a sideways stance rather than facing my opponent head on. I need to be more confident and versatile with my right side. Great classes this week!

Darcy, I do the sideways stance too!! But I never considered that it was due to a lot of left-sided work. Thanks for sharing!

Oops, that last comment was from me, Kailen.

@Darcy... The other problem is with your left leg that far forward, it is exposed to a right leg roundhouse kick which could ultimately result in a takedown.

Stryker Martial Arts said...

@Eric... your ribcage will thank you for that some day!

@Nikki... What if perseverance was a muscle that only got stronger when you use it? Great job this week!

I got three things out of today's training. First was a reminder about how much better I feel when I left weights. Life has gotten in the way a bit lately and I got back on track today. Personally, I feel better both emotionally and physically.

Second, was a reminder about the great people we have training at the school. Their enthusiasm and spirit for training is inspiring and phenominal!

Finally, I was reminded yet again about the importance of stance. A solid foundation is paramount to your martial arts skill set! If you're like me, focus on your footwork, balance, and placement a little more for the next few weeks.

Train Hard!

Unfortunately, I was only able to come to class on Monday this week because I took a course in White Plains the rest of the time. I heard something interesting this week at the course, ,though, that made me think of class: "The way you approach this course is the way you tend to approach things in life."

It got me thinking about how I approach things in kickboxing class and what that lets me know about how I approach challenges otherwise and vice versa.

Like Nikki mentioned about motivation and therefore perseverance, I can completely see that skill from class transferring to other challenges at work. In the opposite direction, I notice that I approach new challenges with a sense of lightness and play and I think that helps me keep some perspective in class when things get tough.

And the list goes on...

Here's what i learned on Monday: Just b/c someone has his hands down doesn't mean he's not ready to throw a punch or to take one. Workout once with Master Dan & you'll get what i mean. It also works for me sometimes...being able to throw my left from waist level and then from chin level puts the other person on guard for a variety of different punches and movements. It might not be for everyone but it helps me develop a guard i can trust.

@Kristin... That sounds like a cool course. I would like to hear more about it when you come in.

That statement "The way you approach this course is the way you tend to approach things in life." tends to be very true.

You can gain an incredible amount of wisdom from looking at things in that light.

Stryker Martial Arts said...

@Dan... I never punch from my waist. I don't know what you're talking about...

Dan G said...

Oh, i'm sorry - it must be a different 6'8" guy hitting me with a right hook with his hands down...my bad.

Stryker Martial Arts said...

Haha... I will be on the lookout.

I learned this week about the importance of basics - especially squaring off against your opponent. For me, its easy to lose focus on that in a different setting( against a person versus a bag) - but that is when its most important.

Stryker Martial Arts said...

@Eric... How do you mean "squaring off"?

Eric said...

i meant that my shoulders and hips weren't always facing my opponent. at times, i turn to the side and that just opens me up.

Stryker Martial Arts said...

Ahhh yes. That is what I thought you meant. It seems that we have an epidemic of that recently.

This week showed me how important my fellow martial artists are as a support network. Through training together, a bond and relationship has been built which I needed to call upon and they were there with full support. I don't know many other environments where that is possible.

Master Dan - Unfortunately I wasn't able to get to training this week b/c of work but wanted to share with everyone how lethargic & "off" i feel. Keep up your training guys, even on those nights where you feel like sitting on the couch. It's as important physically as it is mentally. See you all next week. Dan

@Dan... Looking forward to it. We were missing you this week but we know you were working hard doing important work. Look forward to seeing you next week!
